CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY EXAMINES PROCUREMENT CHAIN MANAGEMENT
CHANTILLY, VIRGINIA
- The New Horizons Foundation (NHF) – A Sheet Metal Industry Initiative
has joined forces with the Electrical Contracting Foundation to fund an immediate project
focused on securing credible information on direct purchasing of materials and labor-only contracts.
The leadership of both construction industry foundations recognized that there is currently no
comprehensive database that clearly defines the impact of various procurement strategies. The
NHF Board authorized a financial investment in this effort and will participate in a contractor-led
task force to oversee and guide the research project.
Following a review of proposals submitted by top universities and research institutions, Motor
Consultants of America has been selected to conduct the research under the direction of Dr. Parviz Daneshgari, President of the firm.
The project’s main components include identifying the ramifications of alternative procurement
approaches; identifying positive alternatives to the direct purchase approach; and outlining a
framework for participants in the traditional procurement process to collaborate on alternatives
that will be beneficial to all. The final report is scheduled for release in October 2003.
The New Horizons Foundation provides industry leadership and financial resources for
investigative studies and educational programs of value to the sheet metal and air conditioning
contracting industry. Projects are selected and implemented annually, based upon
recommendations from contractors in the field, industry association leaders, and academic
recommendations from universities and research institutes throughout North America.
