Summary
This update revisits NHF’s original 2016 study on productivity and prefabrication for HVAC and sheet metal contractors, this time focusing on the return on investment from committing to prefabrication. A task force of SMACNA contractors worked with Dr. Federle through site visits and a survey of SMACNA contractors to assess where firms stand on prefab adoption, how they’re tracking productivity and technology investment, and what resources contractors need to expand prefabrication, up to and including a shift toward prefabricating the bulk of a project. The report also includes a contractor case study walking through how to set goals, measure field and office productivity, and track profit enhancement on a prefabrication-driven project.
